Project Deflect

[ELECTIVE DESCRIPTION]
The exploration into the game development pipeline with CMU's Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) in Summer 2018 will focus on creating engaging experiences with an emphasis on play. Participants in the program will learn industry-standard game creation tools, pitch concepts, co-create prototypes, and deploy a playable game using Unity by the project’s end. A core objective of the project-based learning challenge is to provide insight into the multifaceted roles and applications found in the realm of game design and development.

[GAME DESCRIPTION]
Project Deflect: This is an upcoming project from students in the Carnegie Mellon Summer Academy for Math and Science partnering with Carnegie Mellon's Entertainment Technology center, built in just under four weeks. This game will put you in the role of a colored hexagon that you must rotate and match the color of each incoming beam from viruses and bacteria to deflect them. It will support the use of controllers with support for up to four players cooperatively. We anticipate to release this title by August 10th, 2018, showcasing everything we learned about game development, such as modeling, programming, art direction and more. Come by and try it out!

[PURPOSE]
Enhancing the academic preparation of ethnic minority students and other underrepresented populations in STEM fields.

[SAMS FULL PROGRAM DESCRIPTION]
The Summer Academy for Mathematics and Science is a six-week, rigorous residential experience for rising high school seniors who have a strong interest in computer science, engineering and/or natural science. Carnegie Mellon subsidizes the cost of tuition, room and board for all participants.

The program’s curriculum focuses on assisting students in developing mastery and execution of critical concepts in higher-level, collegiate math, programming, and science. In addition, students will participate in one six-week hands on project designed to expose and engage them to the wonder and excitement of problem solving and innovation. Project outcomes will be showcased to the campus community during the program’s closing symposium.
